SA 101 Elementary Spanish I
An intensive study of the language. Students acquire basic listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in cultural contexts. Taped assignments supplement classroom presentation. Open to all students. Fulfills the Global Society and Languages core requirement. 4 credits

SA 102 Elementary Spanish II
A continued study of the four basic skills in cultural contexts. Tape assignments supplement classroom presentations. Prerequisite: SA 101 or equivalent. Placement testing available. Fulfills Global Society and Languages core requirement. 4 credits

SA 201 Intermediate Spanish
A continuation of the first year sequence with a functional review of grammar and vocabulary. Cultural readings and guided composition are emphasized. Prerequisite: SA 102 or equivalent. Placement testing available. Fulfills Global Society and Languages core requirement. 3 credits

SA 202 Intermediate Spanish Reading and Conversation
The development of conversation skills based on discussion of readings that demonstrate a variety of Spanish written and spoken styles. Readings reflect various Hispanic traditions and societies. Prerequisite: SA 201 or equivalent. Placement testing available. 3 credits

SA 203 Intermediate Spanish Composition
Extensive writing and critiquing with supplemental exercises in style, organization, vocabulary, idiomatic usage and translation. Prerequisite: SA 201 or equivalent. Placement testing available. 3 credits

SA 205 Latin American Civilization
A comprehensive survey of Hispanic history and civilization from the Pre-Columbian period to the present. Readings and discussions are in Spanish. Prerequisite: SA 202 or equivalent. Placement testing available. 3 credits

SA 208 Spanish for the Health Professions
An intermediate level course that presents grammar, vocabulary, and cultural viewpoints for the special purpose of providing health care in the U.S. and in Latin America. Readings, lectures, discussions, and role playing are in Spanish. Prerequisite: SA 201 or equivalent. 3 credits

SA 209 Spanish Civilization
A comprehensive survey of Spanish history and civilization from the Roman Empire to the present. Readings and discussions are in Spanish. Prerequisite: SA 201. Placement testing available. 3 credits

SA 215 Spanish Conversation
The refinement of conversational skills and development of select vocabulary. Debates, presentations, and speeches are featured. Prerequisite: SA 202 or equivalent. Placement testing available. 3 credits

SA 301 Phonetics and Phonemics
An introduction to articulatory phonetics designed to give the student a practical knowledge of the Spanish sound system as compared with English. Students will learn to use the phonetic alphabet and practice transcription. Course also includes introductory work on regional and social variations of pronunciation in the Spanish-speaking world. Prerequisite: SA 201 or equivalent. 3 credits

SA 302 Structure of Modern Spanish
This course is a survey of Hispanic linguistics, including phonology, morphology, syntax, pragmatics, history of the language, sociolinguistics, and psycholinguistics. Prerequisite: SA 201 or equivalent. 3 credits

SA 303 Survey of Spanish Literature
A study of major Spanish works and figures from the Medieval period to the present with a review of various genre including novel, drama, and short stories. Prerequisite: SA 201 or equivalent. 3 credits

SA 304 Survey of Latin American Literature
A study of major periods and figures in the development of Latin American literature from the Conquest to the present. Includes an examination of current trends, such as magical realism, and emphasizes Latin American women authors. Prerequisite: SA 201 or equivalent. 3 credits

SA 400 Independent Study
A specialized study in which the student, with the consent and direction of a faculty member, designs a language or cultural course that is not offered as a regular course. Requires faculty approval. Credit varies

SA 451 Senior Project/Thesis
A project of thesis that demonstrates the student’s scholarship in any area of Hispanic studies. The student will present the project or thesis to language faculty and students. Credit varies
