EN 101 Introduction to Literature
The reading and analysis of prose, poetry, and dramatic literature. Practice in critical writing is an integral part of the course. 3 credits

EN 150 Nonfiction Writing
Introduction to the genre, nonfi ction. Exploration of the scope of this genre including professional and literary outlets and its connection to fi ction and poetry. Minimum prerequisite: B in CC 100 or comparable course. 3 credits

EN 200 Introduction to Creative Writing
Students read a wide range of poetry and fi ction, write fiction and poems, and learn to critique work in a workshop setting. Fall semester, even years. 3 credits

EN 203 Description and Narration
Practice writing nonfiction emphasizing description and first-person narration of scenes, situations, events. Explore possible writing opportunities and outlets and practical application of skills in the marketplace. Minimum prerequisite: “” in CC 100 or comparable course. 3 credits

EN 206 Writing for Business and Industry
Introduction to writing in the marketplace students explore professional writing opportunities and the necessary skills development to pursue employment as a writer; study various writing styles and techniques used in various business settings. Minimum prerequisite: B in CC 100 or comparable course. 3 credits

EN 207 Chaucer
An introduction to the art and language of Chaucer through a critical reading of his short poems, romances, and Canterbury Tales. Spring semester, odd years. 3 credits

EN 220 Linguistics
An introduction to the study of language from structural, historical, social, and psychological perspectives: its acquisition, its systematic nature (phonology, morphology, and syntax), and its social and geographic variations. Fall and spring semesters. 3 credits

EN 222 Language and the Media
A study of language as it is used in electronic and print media. Analysis of specifi c techniques used to manufacture language and of the resulting effects. 3 credits

EN 241 Advanced Creative Writing
A focus on writing fiction or poetry or both genres. Students also read from contemporary writers. Workshop format. Spring semester, odd years. 3 credits

EN 242 Advanced Creative Writing II
A focus on either poetry or fiction writing. Students also practice critical writing using books of contemporary fiction or poetry. Workshop format. Spring semester, even years. 3 credits

EN 243 Language and Resources
Introduction to resources used by professional writers: reference materials, databases, computer networks, desktop publishing, and precise language use. Business and creative nonfiction writing opportunities are explored. 3 credits

EN 244 Corporate Writing
Practice in writing documents used for internal and external communication in companies and organizations. Focus on writing for non-profit business and corporate settings with close examination of processes and priorities. Minimum prerequisite: B in CC 100 or comparable course. 3 credits

EN 247 Travel Writing
Explore and practice the process of writing nonfiction pieces focused on travel. Examine the ‘why’ of travel as a means of personal journey, while exploring and researching the ‘how’ and ‘when’ as well as details of trips, including the destination. Minimum prerequisite: B in CC 100 or comparable course. 3 credits

EN 260 Newswriting
Practice in writing tightly organized, concise, “hard news” stories, including leads, the inverted pyramid, interviewing, and basic investigative skills. Also listed as CM 260. 3 credits

EN 263 Persuasion and Promotion
Application of argumentative and persuasive writing techniques to professional contexts: annual reports, brochures. 3 credits

EN 265 Classical Backgrounds of English Literature
Examination of Greek and Roman epics, plays, and mythology as basis for understanding allusions in English literature as well as studying works as literary creations. Fall semester, even years. 3 credits

EN 270 Survey of English Literature I
Introduction to the masters of English literature from the time of the Anglo-Saxons to William Blake. Fall semester, odd years. 3 credits

EN 271 Survey of English Literature II
An introduction to the masters of English literature from the time of William Blake to the present. Spring semester, even years. 3 credits

EN 301 Shakespeare
An analysis of selected comedies, tragedies, histories, and romances of Shakespeare. Spring semester, odd years. 3 credits

EN 305 American Literature I
An analysis of selected writers from the Puritans until the Civil War. Fall semester, odd years. 3 credits

EN 306 American Literature II
An analysis of selected writers from the Civil War until the present. Spring semester, even years. 3 credits

EN 330 Feature Writing
Practice in interviews, personality profi les, narratives, side-bars, and other forms of “soft news” pieces. Also CM 330. 3 credits

EN 331 Critical Writing
Practice in the art of critical writing by reviewing books, theatre, film, opera, ballet, fi ne arts exhibits, readings in poetry and fiction. Spring semester, even years. 3 credits

EN 335 Critical Application: Thinking and Writing
Explore the connection between the brain and hand in terms of professional writing and creative nonfi ction or literary journalism opportunities. Minimum prerequisite: B in CC 100 or comparable course. 3 credits

EN 338 Literary and Writing Ethics
Consideration and study of business and ethical issues and challenges encountered by writers in the marketplace. Minimum prerequisite: B in CC 100 or comparable course. 3 credits

EN 340 World Literature
Provides a solid foundation in global perspective through an introduction to some of the greatest non-American and non-British works of literature. 3 credits

EN 343 Poetry Writing Seminar
Writing a manuscript of original poems. Critiques and conferences with instructor. Intensive reading and critical response to the work of a major poet. Independent Study. 3 credits

EN 344 Fiction Writing Seminar
Writing a manuscript of short stories or a novel. Critiques and conferences with instructor. Intensive reading and critical response to the work of a major fi ction writer. Independent Study. 3 credits

EN 346 Technical Writing
Develop skills in analysis processes and in writing concise professional pieces including: descriptions, specifications, requests for proposals (RFPs), product development plans, policies, processes, procedures, instructions, short reports, and related correspondence. Minimum prerequisite: B in CC 100 or comparable course. 3 credits

EN 347 Foundation Proposals
Proposal and grantwriting processes with substantial proposals developed by students. 3 credits

EN 348 Strategic Plans
Students practice the process and application of writing strategically through the development of a strategic plan. After analyzing information from a variety of sources, students will use qualitative and quantitative reasoning to write a creative and imaginative, yet practical strategic plan. Minimum prerequisite: B in CC 100 or comparable course. 3 credits

EN 349 Government Grants
Students study and practice the process of writing a fully-developed proposal seeking funding for a specific program or project from government granting sources. They explore the public funding process in Western Pennsylvania as well as national and international trends. Minimum prerequisite: B in CC 100 or comparable course and EN 347, or with permission of instructor. 3 credits

EN 351 Argumentative Writing
Practice writing a variety of argumentative pieces and strengthen skills in developing a case for support. 3 credits

EN 400 Independent Study
Specialized study in which the student engages independently, with the guidance of a faculty member, on a literary topic of interest. Open to all students with permission. Fall and spring semesters. Credit varies

EN 405 Internship
Students engage in practical work experience through placement negotiated with a faculty member prior to registration. Juniors and seniors. Pass/Fail only. Fall and spring semesters. Credit varies

EN 444 Senior Seminar
An opportunity for students to demonstrate the depth and breadth of their knowledge by pursuing challenging independent scholarship. Students present papers to the English faculty and other students. Fall and spring semesters. 2 credits

EN 445 Creative Writing Senior Seminar
Students present a complete manuscript of original poetry or prose to the English faculty and other students. Fall and spring semesters. 2 credits

EN 446 Professional Writing Senior Seminar
Students collect and refine a portfolio of writings; then, through a presentation, demonstrate their ability to synthesize knowledge of professional writing situations. Fall and spring semesters. Interested students should consult with the director of the Professional Writing Program. 2 credits

EN 512 Writing One’s Life
Students draw upon their life experiences to explore the writing of memoirs and autobiography, or as a basis for fiction. 3 credits

EN 520 Women’s Center for Creative Writing Seminar in Fiction
Writing Intensive study of women fiction writers on varying themes. Critical writing and workshopping of student fiction works. 3 credits

EN 530 Women’s Center for Creative Writing Seminar in Poetry
Writing Intensive study of contemporary women poets on varying themes. Critical writing and workshopping of student poems. 3 credits

EN 535 Women’s Center for Creative Writing Seminar in Poetry
Writing Continuation of EN 530, with varying themes. 3 credits
