AR 101 Introduction to Art/Visual Culture I
An introduction to the history of art from the prehistoric period to the year 1300. This course provides a chronology of the major works in the Western tradition and provides the basic terminology and methodologies necessary to analyze these works in a social, historical, religious, and/or material context. Satisfies LAI requirement. 3 credits
AR 102 Introduction to Art/Visual Culture II
An introduction to art production in the west from the Renaissance to the early twentieth century. Students learn the basic vocabulary and the basic methodologies necessary to analyze key works from this period and critically engage with issues raised by the course content. Special attention is given to the representation of social relations, gender, religion, and politics; the context in which works of art were produced, used, and displayed. Satisfies LAI requirement. 3 credits
AR 111 Basic Art I
Introduction to two-dimensional drawing media, techniques, and concepts. The course will cover line, value, perspective, and other basic drawing issues. Satisfies LAI requirement. 3 credits

Second level course following AR 111, Basic Art I. Further explorations of two-dimensional media. 3 credits
AR 115 Basic Art and Design
Introduction to two-dimensional design concepts. Course will include composition elements, as well as a component on color theory. These issues will be explored through a variety of media. Satisfies Art LAI requirement. 3 credits
AR 206 Aesthetics
Investigation of major contributions to aesthetics, art theory, and art criticism through reading and discussion of primary and secondary sources. Also listed as PH 206. 3 credits
AR 207 Film and Media Criticism
An introduction to the aesthetic and social analysis of mass media, fi lm, and television through critical writing and discussion. Also listed as CM 207. 3 credits
AR 209 Women and Art
An investigation of the history of art through the lens of feminist critical theory. The course explores the production and status of women artists and women patrons from the Renaissance to the present as well as the representation of women in art during this same period. Students critically engage with course material and course readings through class dialogue, written assignments, and collaborative projects. Satisfies Art LAI requirement, Core WS, and Skills Integration-Writing Requirements. Prerequisite: AR 102. 3 credits
AR 221 Life Drawing and Media
Second-year level experience in drawing of the human figure. Included in the course are concepts such as gesture, anatomy, proportion, and composition. Various media will be explored. 3 credits
AR 222 Concepts and Media
Concepts and media studio courses are designed to familiarize students with contemporary conceptual art skills, thinking through the process of artistic idea generation, personal approaches to subject matter and content, and developing individual art practices. Themes can include: the self; processes and systems; time and space, etc. Courses can be repeated for credit and have no prerequisites. 3 credits
AR 224 Introduction to Fiber Arts
Introduction to creative expression using traditional and contemporary approaches to fi ber and mixed media materials. Emphasis on combining content and form; and application of craft techniques such as quilting, crocheting, basketry, sewing, etc. to production of expressive art works. 3 credits
AR 227 Painting I
Introduction to basic concepts and techniques in oil painting. There will be a concentration on color mixtures, creating form, space, and light. A variety of subjects will be explored. Prerequisites: AR 111, AR 114 and AR 227. 3 credits
AR 229 Drawing and Painting II
Exploration of advanced drawing and painting issues. Experimentation with media and technique. Prerequisites: AR 111, AR 114 or permission of instructor. 3 credits
AR 240 Sophomore Review
Provides the student with an opportunity to 1) assess and present her art work and her progress to the studio arts faculty and 2) receive a straightforward assessment as to the strengths and weaknesses of her work and her progress. 1 credit
AR 243 Representations of Women: High Art/Popular Culture
A study and critique of concepts of gender and sexuality in representative texts (fi lm, painting, music, and television). Critical and source materials are drawn from art history, cultural studies, feminist theory, and history. Also listed as HS 243 and WS 243. 3 credits
AR 245 Heritage of American Art
An Introduction to the major themes in the art and culture of the United States from the colonial period to the twentieth century. Special attention is given to the issues of race, class, and gender as they relate to art production, art reception and the articulation of “national identity” in the visual culture of the United States. Satisfies LAI requirement. 3 credits
AR 249 American Art of Our Century
Survey of the dynamic development of painting and sculpture in the United States during the twentieth century, particularly the interaction of traditional American and innovative European styles. 3 credits
AR 254 World Architecture
A survey of Western architecture from the prehistoric period to the present which focuses on particular monuments, both public and private. Architectural types, stylistic infl uences, urban design, and cross-cultural currents are studied in order to provide students with a vocabulary of terms for discussing and analyzing how architecture both shapes the environment and communicates meaning. 3 credits
AR 266 Special Topics: Modern
A special topics course in the area of the history of modern art. Students engage in an in-depth exploration of particular topic, issue, theme or artist of the modern period through advance readings, class discussion, and research and written exercises. Past topics include: mural painting and social change in the twentieth century. Satisfies LAI requirement. Requirements. Prerequisite: AR 102. 3 credits
AR 268 Contemporary Art Issues: Art and Social Engagement
Introduction to the art theories and practices of artists working with social and political issues in the twentieth century. Surveys major international modernist art movements such as Futurism, Constructivism, Expressionism, Dada, and Surrealism. Concentrates on the social engagement and art activism of artists from the 1960s to 1990s in the context of social and political movements. 3 credits
AR 305 Memory
Viewing the topic of memory through the two lenses of theology and art, the student will assimilate aspects of the material presented by each professor into an understanding that places the two viewpoints into a more holistic framework. Prerequisite: CC 101. 3 credits
AR 315 Sculpture
Concentration on formal and technical problems of three-dimensional media (volume, space, structure) and investigation of the techniques of modeling, casting, carving and construction using a variety of materials. Prerequisites: AR 101 or AR 102, AR 221 or AR 227 or permission of instructor. 3 credits
AR 317 Painting II
Course focuses on more advanced painting issues. Discussions of painting styles, personal voice, and other issues of expression. Refi nements in basic skills while reviewing and exploring contemporary visual directions. 3 credits
AR 321 Printmaking
Introduction to basic printmaking methods. Course will include lino block, monoprint, calligraphy, and drypoint etching. Emphasizes development of print and precision of execution. Prerequisites: AR 101, AR 102, AR 114, AR 115, or permission of instructor. 3 credits
AR 330 Advanced Projects in Art/Art History
Advanced project work in any visual media for students beyond the sophomore level who have taken the introductory courses in drawing, painting, sculpture, ceramics, and art history. Students work individually or collaboratively on projects of their own design. The emphasis of the course will be on conceptualizing, researching, and executing substantive art projects, as well as advancing student’s familiarity with techniques and media. This course satisfies major requirements for art majors, and elective art requirements for art education, art therapy, and art education graduate students. Permission of instructor required. 3 credits
AR 331 Ceramics
Introduction to ceramic design and techniques, including the hand-built methods of pinch, coil, drape, and slab as well as wheel throwing with stoneware clay. Emphasis on creativity, concepts, terminology, and process. Satisfies Art LAI requirement. 3 credits
AR 355 Introduction to Computer Art
An introductory course in basic computer art skills from designing through painting, montage, and rendering. Satisfies Art LAI requirement. Satisfies technology skills integration. 3 credits
AR 400 Independent Study
A student-designed course in an area of art not covered by current courses. Requires the approval and sponsorship of a faculty member prior to registration. Credit varies
AR 421 Senior Project
A project in any area of art including art history proposed and executed by the student. Projects must be approved and advised by a faculty member. Required of majors. Open to art majors only. 2 to 8 credits |
