Members of the community gathered on the hilltop campus of
Carlow University the morning of Saturday, April 5, 2014, to
commemorate the inauguration of Suzanne K. Mellon, PhD as the University's 10th president.
This historic celebration included more than 60 distinguished
delegates from colleges and universities around the country. Carlow
students, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends as well as local
civic and religious leaders delivered welcoming remarks to Dr.
Mellon. Mayor Bill Peduto issued an official proclamation stating
that April 5, 2014, would be Suzanne K. Mellon day in the City of
Pittsburgh. The ceremony included emotional performances from local
musicians and a poignant reading from poet (and Carlow faculty
member) Jan Beatty. The featured guest speaker, Reverend
Dennis H. Holtschneider, CM, president of DePaul University
delivered remarks on the importance of a Catholic education in
Dr. Mellon's presidential address spoke to the Mercy heritage of Carlow University while also looking
toward the future. She announced plans for two major undertakings:
the University Commons, a
renovation of Grace library that will transform the space into a
center of learning, and the Institute for Women's Leadership and Empowerment, which will
increase the capacity of women to become change agents and
entrepreneurs within the region and the world.
