Biography

Officer Ference began his public safety career in 1977, working as a security officer at PNC Bank and then worked at Allegheny Center Mall as a corporal in the Public Safety Department. Throughout the following years, he worked as a Pennsylvania State Constable in the Mon Valley area and worked closely with the Pennsylvania State Police detail in the City of Clairton. He served on a Narcotics Task Force in the Mon Valley, assisting with arrest warrants during drug raids. He also worked as a public safety officer in a Private/Public Housing Authority within the City of Pittsburgh. He worked for several years as a public safety officer in a medical and psychiatric hospital in Pittsburgh and on a federal research center located in South Park. He served as a volunteer firefighter for 18 years as a volunteer, starting in 1989 and advancing up to assistant chief in Bellevue Borough, where I also worked as a police dispatcher, starting in 1992 and then a police communication supervisor until 2010.

Officer Ference came to Carlow University in January 2011 as a Police Communication Officer, was promoted to Police Communication Supervisor in 2014, and has enjoyed his service to the Carlow community. He has training in crisis negotiations and in mental health first aid for first responders. He is very involved in the Presbyterian Church as a Ruling Elder and Trustee and serves on several committees and boards of the church. He is also a member on the Committee on Preparation for Ministry at the Pittsburgh Presbytery. When he is not working or volunteering he enjoys time with his grandchildren and family. Currently, he is pursuing the process of getting credentialed as a lay minister responding to disasters with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. He has completed the first phase of the training.
