The Carlow softball team opened the 2018 season at Space Coast Spring Training in Titusville, Fla. on Saturday, March 3.
The Celtics (0-2) dropped two games to NAIA opponent Benedictine (Kan.) College (5-1), which had already played four games on the season. The Ravens won the first game, 3-1, and broke open the second game, 9-1.
In the first game, Benedictine took a 1-0 lead on an error in the bottom of the first inning, then both teams went cold offensively till the fifth.
Tristan Voss (FR/Enon Valley, Pa.) earned the first hit of Carlow's season and the first of her collegiate career in the second inning, but was stranded on second base.
Sarah Methvin gave the Ravens some breathing room in the fifth inning, when she capped a three-hit frame with a two-RBI single to left field.
First baseman Danielle Levato (JR/Beaver Falls, Pa., pictured above) earned Carlow's only other hit in the contest against Benedictine pitcher Erin Ziebarth. She hit a one-out RBI-single in the top of the seventh inning, but the Ravens earned the last two outs to seal their win.
Carlow pitcher Nicole Hall (SR/Jeannette, Pa.) took the tough-luck loss in the circle. She threw the first three innings, allowing two hits and the early unearned run, with one walk and one strikeout.
The Celtics pitched by committee for the rest of both games. Annamarie Osiecki (FR/Erie, Pa.) relieved Hall and threw two innings, allowing the final two runs on three hits and three walks. Alysa Fairman (FR/Pittsburgh, Pa.) finished the last inning of the first game, giving up one hit and striking out one.
In the second game, Abby Stroud (SO/New Egypt, N.J.) pitched the first four innings for Carlow, allowing four runs on seven hits and two walks, with six strikeouts. Caitlyn Suter (SO/Monaca, Pa.) came on for the next two frames, allowing one run on three hits and two walks.
The Ravens had a comfortable 5-0 lead before the Celtics scored their only run of the second game in the bottom of the sixth inning. Adrianna Gottheld (FR/Charleroi, Pa.) doubled to center field and scored on an RBI groundout by Samantha Wampler (FR/Pittsburgh, Pa.).
Fairman ended the game in the circle, allowing four runs on three hits in the last inning.
Carlow finished the game with Gottheld's double and four other hits — one each by Suter, Kasey Wolford (FR/Lower Burrell, Pa.), Olivia Hutton (SO/Pittsburgh, Pa.), and Kelsey Geyer (SR/Pittsburgh, Pa.).
The Celtics look to bounce back tomorrow, when they take on Sinclair (Ohio) Community College at 11:30am and St. Mary-of-the-Woods (Ind.) College at 2pm.
