Celtics open tennis season against IU Kokomo

The Carlow tennis team opened the 2018 season on the road Sunday against River States Conference opponent Indiana University Kokomo.

Each of the nine matchups were close, but the Celtics fell, 6-3. Carlow picked up wins at No. 1 singles, No. 4 singles, and No. 5 singles.

Emily Armstrong (JR/New Kensington, Pa.) led the Celtics with a 6-1, 6-3 victory against Adri Ward at No. 1 singles.

MaryKathryn Hankewycz
(SO/Irwin, Pa.) earned a hard-fought win in a tie break against Anna Boyer, 5-7, 6-4 (10-7), at No. 4 singles.

Melanie Long (SO/Pittsburgh, Pa.) picked up Carlow’s other win at No. 5 singles, 6-3, 6-1, against Katie Hart.

Armstrong and her twin sister, Catherine Armstrong (JR/New Kensington, Pa.), came up just short in the most competitive doubles match of the day. Ward and Boyer edged them, 9-7, at No. 1 doubles.

The Celtics next play March 10, at Midway (Ky.) University.
