The Carlow women's basketball team closed out 2017 against NCAA Division II Tiffin University on Friday, Dec. 29. The Celtics fell, 77-59, after Tiffin pulled away with a strong second half.
The Dragons (4-8) opened the game with a 13-0 run and led, 24-14, at the end of the first quarter. However, the Celtics (2-6/0-3/2-1) came back in the second quarter, cutting their deficit to 35-30 at halftime. Carlow maintained momentum early in the second half to take a 36-35 lead. But Tiffin relied on its deep bench to end the third quarter with an 18-8 run and a 53-44 lead.
The fourth quarter was all Tiffin. The Dragons outscored the Celtics, 22-5, to end the contest. They held a 14-4 paint advantage and a 7-2 edge in points off turnovers in the final quarter. They also shot 76 percent in the final frame.
Emma Stille (SO/Columbus, Ohio) led the Celtics with 21 points, 16 rebounds, four assists, and three blocks. It was her third double-double of the season. She shot 50 percent from the field (8-of-16) and 83 percent from the free-throw line (5-of-6).
Alexis Yanief (JR/Pittsburgh, Pa.) added 12 points and Ashlyn Jonczak (FR/Natrona Heights, Pa.) had 10 points and three steals for Carlow.
The Celtics next host Indiana University Kokomo in an RSC matchup on Tuesday, Jan. 2, at 6pm.
