The Carlow women’s soccer team dropped a heartbreaker, 2-1, in double overtime to Westminster College on Saturday, Sept. 23, at Highmark Stadium.
The Celtics (4-2/0-0/3-0) scored first off the foot of Emily Emge (JR/Beaver Falls, Pa.) in the 12th minute and took a 1-0 lead to halftime, but Marissa Grande netted the equalizer for Westminster in the 62nd minute.
With 3:18 remaining in the second overtime, Keely Birsic launched the game-winning goal into the top of the net from 20 yards out. The shot was out of the leaping reach of Carlow goalkeeper Lexie Mirenda (SR/Altoona, Pa.) who performed well against the most shots (21) she had faced all season.
Mirenda made 12 saves for Carlow. Rachel Flory (SO/Huntington Beach, Calif.) also had a strong game defensively, making three plays that prevented wide open Westminster shots.
However, the Celtics’ offense, which had outscored its previous opponents 30-2, struggled for just the second time this season. Titans earned 14 shots on goal, while the Celtics took seven.
Carlow goes on the road Sept. 28 for its first River States Conference game of the year, against Cincinnati Christian University.
