Celtics knock off NCAA DII Shaw University

The Carlow women’s soccer team moved its record to 4-1 and knocked off NCAA Division II Shaw University, 2-0, on Thursday, Sept. 21, at Highmark Stadium.

The match was scoreless at halftime, though Carlow held an 8-1 advantage in shots and an 8-0 advantage in corner kicks.

In the 70th minute, Shaw defender Melina Burnside drew a red card, leaving the Bears one player down for the remaining 20 minutes.

Alexa Mermigas (SR/Wexford, Pa.) broke the tie in the 75th minute, dribbling to the corner of the box and launching a lob over the goalkeeper that ricochetted off the far post and into the back of the net.

Kristina Wallace (JR/Jeannette, Pa.) added an insurance goal in the 83rd minute, beating her defender one-on-one and earning a wide open shot in the center of the goal.

Lexie Mirenda (SR/Altoona, Pa.) earned the win in goal, with her second shutout of the season. She faced eight shots, five on goal, and made five saves.

Carlow finished the contest with a 20-7 advantage in shots, an 11-5 advantage in shots on goal and a 10-1 advantage in corner kicks.

The Celtics return to action Sept. 23, when they host Westminster College.
