The Carlow women’s basketball team edged Penn State Beaver, 62-61, in a USCAA rivalry Thursday evening, in Monaca.
Carlow led 34-28 at halftime, and 49-38 after the third quarter. The Lions made a run in the final frame, outscoring the Celtics, 23-13, with Mason Depetro making two baskets in the final 1:11 to get Beaver within one point. However, the Lions missed a last-second shot and Noelle Vallimont (JR/Erie, Pa.) grabbed the defensive rebound at the buzzer to seal the win for Carlow.
The victory was Carlow’s third this season against the Lions (15-8). The Celtics also took home a 65-53 win in the Penn State Beaver Tip Off Tournament, on Nov. 20, and put away the Lions, 82-39, at home, on Jan. 17.
Alexis Yanief (JR/Pittsburgh, Pa.) led the Celtics (9-15/1-13) with a season-high 26 points. Emma Stille (FR/Columbus, Ohio) posted her 10th double double of the year, with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Mariah Evans (FR/Beaver Falls, Pa.) contributed 12 rebounds and Kayla Brownlee (JR/Pittsburg, Pa.) had four assists.
Depetro finished with 20 points. Asia Borders added 16 points and Mia Mattes 14 points and five assists for Beaver. Cassanda Flowers had 11 rebounds.
The Celtics host Cincinnati Christian at 1 p.m. Saturday.
