The seventh-ranked Indiana University East men’s basketball team overpowered Carlow, 102-57, in a River States Conference contest Saturday afternoon at Oakland Catholic High School.
The Celtics (3-22/2-11) trailed just 37-31 at halftime, but the Red Wolves (20-7/11-3) played smothering defense in the second half. They forced Carlow to make 14 turnovers, nine in the second half, and scored 21 points off of them.
IU East also held a 50-34 advantage in rebounding and outscored Carlow, 26-12, in second chance points. The Red Wolves got 52.1 percent (38 of 73) of their shots to fall, while the Celtics shot 39.1 percent (27-69).
Bishop Smith led the Red Wolves with 29 points, five assists and three steals. Brad Hunt scored 17 points, Jacoby Claypoole had 16 points and eight rebounds and Nate Niehoff had 10 points and eight boards.
Miles Sunder (JR/Jeanette, Pa.) paced Carlow with 17 points and nine rebounds. Charlie Scharbo (JR/Jefferson Hills, Pa.) posted 10 points, seven rebounds and four assists. PJ McLaughlin (SR/Irwin, Pa.) added 10 points.
The Celtics host Point Park University in the annual Pink the Pavilion game at 8 p.m. Tuesday.
