Celtics start Tip Off Tournament with a win

The Carlow women’s basketball team won its first game of the Penn State Beaver Tip Off Tournament on Saturday, November 19. The Celtics defeated Penn State Brandywine, 65-59, to stay undefeated on the season.

Emma Stille (FR/Columbus, Ohio) led Carlow (3-0/0-0/4-0) with 13 points, eight rebounds and four steals. Alexis Yanief (JR/Pittsburgh, Pa.) added 12 points, seven rebounds and three assists.

Kylie Owoc (JR/Pittsburgh, Pa.) scored 12 points for Carlow, Mariah Evans (FR/Beaver Falls, Pa.) had eight rebounds and two blocks and Kayla Brownlee (SO/Pittsburgh, Pa.) tossed three assists.

The Celtics took a lead, 14-5, in the first quarter and maintained it until the Lions tied the game at 40 with eight minutes to play. However, Carlow went on an 8-2 run that included six converted free-throws by Yanief, Stille and Bria Rathway (SO/Belle Vernon, Pa.) to put the game away.

Carlow outrebounded Brandywine, 38-30, and shot 41.1% to the Lions’ 32.7%.

The Celtics play tournament host Penn State Beaver on Sunday.
