Hot shooting helps No. 22 Saint Xavier past Celtics in second half

The Carlow men’s basketball team battled but fell, 91-74, against No. 22 Saint Xavier (Ill.) University, on Friday, Nov. 4, in the IU East Wetzel Auto Red Wolf Classic.

The Cougars (1-1) hit a three-pointer to break a tie and take a 34-31 lead going into halftime. They followed it up with a 67.9 shooting percentage in the second half to extend their lead. Still, the Celtics trailed by just 11 with three minutes remaining before leading scorer Charlie Scharbo (JR/Jefferson Hills, Pa.) fouled out.

Scharbo posted a double-double in his second straight 20-point performance, after netting 27 on Wednesday against MVNU. Against Saint Xavier, he led Carlow with 23 points, 14 rebounds, and four assists.

Miles Sunder (JR/Jeannette, Pa.) scored 13 points and made two steals. Jacob St. George (SO/Monaca, Pa.) added 12 points and Rece Henneman (FR*/Clarksville, Pa.) 11. Zach Bryan (JR/Irwin, Pa.) was the assists leader, with five.

After being outrebounded, 53-21, by MVNU, the Celtics turned around their performance on the boards, outrebounding Saint Xavier, 37-35.

The Celtics (0-2/0-0 RSC) finish the weekend tournament against Point University (Ga.), at 1 pm Saturday.
