The Carlow University men’s basketball team dropped its season opener Wednesday, Nov. 2, to (RV) Mount Vernon Nazarene (Ohio) University, 122-74, at MVNU’s Ariel Arena.

The Celtics (0-1/0-0 RSC) hung around in the first half, trailing 57-39 at the break, but ultimately MVNU’s size was too much. The Cougars outrebounded Carlow, 53-21, and scored 54 points in the paint.

MVNU (3-0/0-0 Crossroads) also made 11 steals and forced the Celtics into 17 turnovers, turning those into 33 points, and shot a blazing 47.1% from the three-point line.

Charlie Scharbo (JR/Jefferson Hills, Pa.) led the Celtics with 27 points and Zach Bryan (JR/Irwin, Pa.) had 15 points and five assists. Jacob St. George (SO/Monaca, Pa.) added 10 points and five assists, and Miles Sunder (JR/Jeannette, Pa.) had 10 points.

The Celtics also got a solid debut from newcomer Chance Wright (FR/Bethel Park, Pa.), who scored six points in his 24 minutes of action.

Carlow returns to action Friday, Nov. 4, against Saint Xavier (Ill.) University, at the IU East Wetzel Auto Red Wolf Classic.
