The Carlow University soccer team lost an early lead to crosstown rival Point Park and fell, 2-1, in the RSC Game of the Week on Saturday, Oct. 29, at Highmark Stadium.
The Celtics (5-8-2/4-4/1-1) took control in the seventh minute, when Malak Shuman (FR/Monroeville, Pa.) tapped the ball to Kristina Wallace (SO/Jeannette, Pa.) on a free kick and Wallace found the open left side of the net. The goal was Walace’s team-leading 10th of the season.
The Pioneers (8-7-2/6-2) tied the game in the 44th minute, when Katherine Melhuish scored from more than 18 yards out on a pass from Izzy Hunter.
Tatum Fabian sneaked in the game-winner for Point Park in the 77th minute, after Carlow goalkeeper Lexie Mirenda (JR/Altoona, Pa.) was forced to defend Simone Keibler and left the other side of the goal open.
Mirenda, the defending RSC Women’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week, faced 25 shots, 10 on goal, and made eight saves.
Point Park goalkeeper Rebecca Cohen faced seven shots, two shots on goal, from Carlow and made one save.
The Celtics celebrated Senior Day, honoring Torrey Reaghard (SR/Oakdale, Pa.), who has seen action in all four years of her career, including every game this season. She has scored three goals and had one assist during her career.
The full day of RSC contests finalized the regular-season standings and set the playoff field for the tournament, which begins Saturday, Nov. 5.
With the win, the Pioneers locked up second place in the RSC standings and a bye in the first round of the conference playoffs.
The Celtics finished in fourth place, with their head-to-head victory against Cincinnati Christian breaking the tie for the spot. Carlow will host CCU in a first-round match Saturday. Game time is TBA.
