The Carlow University women’s soccer team earned its second straight win Saturday, Oct. 8. The Celtics defeated Midway University, 3-1, wrapping up a road trip to Kentucky that also included a 4-0 win against Brescia University.
The Celtics (4-5-2/3-1/0-1) move to 3-1 in River States Conference play and, after a slow start to the season, have won three out of their last four matches.
Lexie Houk (FR/Racine, PA) put Carlow on the board in the fifth minute, with an unassisted goal. Malak Shuman (FR/Monroeville, PA) scored what would be the game-winner in the 12th minute, assisted by Kristina Wallace (SO/Jeannette, PA).
The Celtics took the 2-0 lead into halftime and added to it after the break. Alexa Mermigas (JR/Wexford, PA) scored an unassisted goal in the 63rd minute.
Kindsay Miller-Riney scored Midway’s goal in the 73rd minute. But a 87th-minute goal by Emily Emge (SO/Beaver Falls, PA), assisted by Maura Bevan (JR/Pittsburgh, PA), sealed the game for the Celtics.
Lexie Mirenda (JR/Altoona, PA) made nine saves in her complete game in the net for Carlow.
Emily Belt made four saves for Midway (5-2-2).
The Eagles outshot the Celtics, 19-9, and earned five corner kicks compared to Carlow’s three, but Carlow was able to finish their attempts.
The Celtics next host Ohio Christian, on Thursday, Oct. 13, at 4pm.
