The Carlow University women’s golf team began competition Monday, Sept. 26 in the River States Conference Women’s Golf Fall Preview Tournament, at Lassing Pointe Golf Course, in Union, Kentucky.
On the first day of competition, Midway University shot a team score of 335 and held a nine shot lead over IU East (344) and the rest of the field. There were 27 holes played, and there will be 27 more holes played on Tuesday, Sept. 27 to complete the 54-hole tournament.
A total of eight RSC teams were represented at the tournament, which serves as a fall preview to the RSC women's golf championship to be held in the spring season.
Midway got out in front thanks to 18-hole individual leader Kathryn Lawler, who fired a first-round 78. She led by two over IU East's Bre Nowak, who opened with an 80.
The Celtics shot a team score of 455 on Monday, and sit in seventh place entering Tuesday’s round. Carlow was led by Natalie Abt and Hailey Schleich, who each shot a 96. Samantha Stefanik shot a 122 and Blake Sirko a 141.
Abt and Schleich bounced back from the rough start when the Celtics played the first nine holes of their second round Monday. Abt shot a 41 and Schleich a 48.
“It was a rough outing for the first-ever RSC preview for us,” Carlow head coach Ryan Shank said. “Conditions were difficult for a large part of our round due to wind and rain, but our ladies battled and made us proud.”
